Many people are curious about having décor with cow hides. Cow hides can be used for many different purposes and cow hide rugs are one of the most popular ways to use cow hides in décor. Before purchasing any cow hide rug, there are a few things to consider.

One thing to ask yourself is how do you prefer the cow hide rug made? There are generally two types of rugs, those which are chemically treated and those which are not. The natural oil based rugs are excellent choices for those who are environmentally conscious of using chemicals. The chemically treated rugs, however, are generally better for wear and tear throughout the years. Keep these things in mind when deciding where to place your rug.
When you are deciding where to place your cow hide rug, it is important to know if the rug will be a high traffic area with lots of use, or a low traffic area with the occasional use. High traffic areas require a sturdy rug. If there are pets to consider, be sure to take into consideration the age of your pets and their habits. Pets who chew and claw often are not compatible with cow hide rugs. It is best to keep these rugs in the low traffic areas.
There are different types of cow hide rugs and one of the choices you will make will be the hair length of the rug. A rug with long hair can be soft, warm, and rustic. A rug with short hair is stylish, sleek, and smooth. Depending on your décor, you will want to consider which hair length choice is better for you.
Next, ask yourself what kind of theme you will have. A room with a cowboy theme can have denim furniture and pale leather accessories with a flat short haired rug. A studious and sophisticated room, such as one for a library or for hunting trophies, may relish a long haired rug, perhaps in darker colors to match the dark leather décor. There is a rug for every room.
You will need to measure the size of the area for your rug. A rug too small may not be noticed in a room full of other decorations, however, a rug too large may be overwhelming for a room meant to be simple and light.
Cow hide rugs are a great addition for almost any décor and there are numerous styles, colors, and sizes to choose from. These are questions, however, to keep in mind when choosing décor with cow hides.

There are many reasons to purchase a cow hide rug, however, upon purchasing it is important to find out the recommendations for cleaning cow hides.

One mistake many people make is putting their cow hide rug in the family washing machine. You must avoid this mistake at all costs. Putting your delicate cow hide rugs in a washing machine can tear the rugs or cause bald patches that will be irreparable. Also, cow hide is not meant to stay wet and washing machines can cause water damage to a cow rug. It is also not recommended to take your rug to the dry cleaners. Unlike leather jackets, cow hide rugs are not meant to be dry cleaned either due to the heat and chemicals.
There are mixed reviews about vacuuming your cow hide rugs. Although some people will say it is okay to vacuum a cow hide rug, just like any other rug, it is also recommended to avoid this cleaning method. Because the cow hide is very thin, it can easily get stuck in the vacuum and ripped or torn. Also, the vacuum will suck up any loose hairs, and this could potentially cause bald spots on your cow hide rug.. Dusting your rug gently with a very soft bristled brush, or gently shaking any dust onto the surrounding floor, is recommended instead.
It is, of course, always best to avoid spilling anything on your rug. Cow hide rugs are not meant for high traffic areas, so in the even of a spill you must act quickly. First, use a dry rag or paper towel to sop up any excess liquid from the rug. Do not rub the rug, just blot the rug gently to soak up the spill. Next, use a gentle cleaning agent to clean the spill. Apply a soft liquid laundry detergent or dish washing liquid to a clean sponge or rag and clean the spill. Never use bleach or other harsh chemicals to clean a hide skin rug.
Use the cleaning rag and detergent to clean any liquid color stains from the cow hide rug. You can rub the rug in a soft circular motion, however, it is always best to go with the direction of the hair growth. Continue this step until the spot is clean. You can then clean off the detergent with a little bit of vinegar in water. It is recommended you set the rug out under the sun in order to dry quickly.
Your cow hide rug will give you many years of use and home décor, however, it is always important to know the proper way to clean your rug. When purchasing your rug, it is recommended to ask the store associate the best methods for cleaning cow hides.

Learning to brain tan cow hides can be arduous and strenuous work, however, it is a tried and true method which eliminates the need for harsh chemicals. Brain tanning cow hides simply makes use of the animals brain to wash and prepare the cow hide for softening. There are a few basic steps, however, for the brain tanning process.

When tanning a cow hide the first step will always be to carefully remove any excess flesh or fat from the cow hide. This is best accomplished with a sharp knife, however, to get very detailed in the flesh removal process, a dull knife is actually preferred. The reason for this is that a dull knife will help prevent accidental cuts and tears into the hide, which would damage the hide.
Do not worry if you still have some flesh left on the cow hide after the initial scraping. This is to be expected and in order to remove the excess flesh you will need to soak the cow hide in water overnight allowing it to soften. After the hide has soaked overnight, use the dull knife and remove as much of the remaining skin and fat as possible. Clean the water to avoid bacteria growth and then re-soak the cow hide. Repeat this process for the next few days removing the excess flesh and hair from the cow hide.
After your cow hide is completely free of excess fat and meat, you will begin the braining process. Using one pound of brains, liquefy the brains as much as possible in a food processor. Next, mix the brains in two gallons of water creating the wash that will be used for the tanning. Although the brains of pigs are most often recommended, using the brains of the cow works just as well and helps put all of the cow parts to good use. You may need more brain wash solution, depending on the size of the cow hide.
Now that you have the brain soak prepared, completely submerge the cow hide into the solution and soak it overnight. Make sure every part of the cow hide is covered in the brain solution to evenly soften and prepare the hide. After twenty four hours, remove the hide from the solution and allow to stretch out and dry. Let the cow hide dry in a cool dark place, as opposed to sunlight and heat, in order to avoid having the cow hide rot and gather bacteria. It is also a good idea to keep the hide stretched with ties or plywood so it does not shrink in the drying process.
Once the hide is completely dry, wash the hide in cold water to rinse off the brain solution. Allow the cow hide to dry and then place in a smoke house with cedar chips. This makes the hide even more pliable and soft. Only keep the hide in the smokehouse for a few hours and keep a close eye on the cow hide to make sure it does not dry out too much. If you choose to repeat the process, you can wash the cow hide in another brain solution, allow it to stretch and dry, and then wash in clean water and allow it to dry again by placing through a wringer. This is not a necessary final step, however, it will make the hides softer, depending on your preference, when choosing to brain tan cow hides.
